October - December 2009

Message from the CGM & CEO

Dear Staff..

Once again I would like to welcome all of you in this issue of Al-Tijari News and seize this opportunity to congratulate all of you on the occasion of new Hijri year and the beginning of the New Year 2010.

The financial crisis that hit global economies, and took its toll on many Arab & GCC economies in September 2008 is still the mounting concern to the financial experts and bankers. Some economists believe that the global financial turmoil is drawing to an end amidst the soaring oil prices and the relatively good performance of some Arab & regional equity markets. However, the fallouts of the global financial crisis will not be remedied overnight as number of economists & financial analysts deem that remedying the ramifications leftover by the financial crisis may take years on the back of the uncertainty prevailing in the financial markets, coupled with the sluggish performance of some stock markets which negatively affect investors' sentiment and led to decline in the demand for credit.

Commercial Bank of Kuwait's financial results for the third quarter of 2009 came in line with the financial crisis developments, where our Bank continued its conservative provisioning policy during the third quarter of 2009 reporting profits of KD 99 million before provisions. However, and in view of the conservative policy our Bank adopted since the beginning of the year and which aims at building up a solid provisioning base, the Bank reported a net loss of KD 1.6 million. As you are aware, when markets bounce back, the economic cycle will recover and investment & credit markets shall regain the trust of investors and lending activities shall boom gain, then such provisions will be taken back to profits. As I have always confirmed, customer service & persistence at work will remain the basic pillars of our business plans. Together and hand in hand, with the teamwork spirit our progress and achievements will continue and we will be proud enough to pass such achievements in review in the upcoming issues of Al-Tijari News.

Once again, I congratulate you on the occasion of New Hijra Year and I hope  that 2010 will be a year full of excellent accomplishments for CBK and for each and every staff member as well.

GM- Financial Controller

2009 has been a challenging year to say the least! Kuwait seemed to enter the global financial crisis later than other countries and probably has a little further to go before the recovery starts and business picks up. The Bank has been affected in 2009 taking provisions on its loan and investment portfolios and will probably continue this policy into 2010. The focus has been to set aside provisions required as soon as possible to clean the balance sheet. 2010 is likely to be as tough as 2009 if not tougher as asset values have not yet recovered and additional write downs may be required at KSE listed companies when they report their 2009 results. To continue competing and maintain our position as a top tier bank in Kuwait we are going to have to raise our already high standards higher and continue to deliver excellent service and products to our target segments using the most convenient and efficient delivery channels. We will also have to ensure that we maintain our position as the most efficient bank in Kuwait with the lowest cost to income ratio by continuing to identify process improvements and efficiencies. The coming year will be hard but working as a team we will emerge at the end a stronger Bank.
